Perhaps the central focus - that serves to both enhance the identity of the area and visually pull people in to the site - could be this partially covered multi use space in the square.
Having looked at something like Catarina Market in Barcelona and heard the local shop assistants calling for a space for the community to meet, it seems this type of icon for the area could tick lots of boxes. It could also serve for sheltered seating and market space in bad weather.
